How to Identify the Right Window Espagnolette

A window espagnolette (often shortened to “espag”) is the multi-point locking mechanism fitted into the frame of a uPVC or aluminium casement window, so it drives the shootbolts that lock the window at several points around the sash whenever the handle is turned. Because of this, you need to know three things before ordering a replacement:

1. Mechanism Type

Inline espags run in a single straight line along the window frame, with the handle spindle positioned centrally along that same line. Offset espags, on the other hand, step out to one side, so the handle sits away from the running line of the mechanism.

2. Backset

This is the distance from the face of the window frame to the centre of the spindle hole. Our stocked range at the trade counter covers 20mm, 22mm and 25mm backsets, so measure from the frame edge to the centre of the handle spindle to be sure.

3. Length

Measure the full length of the mechanism from end to end, or, for an offset espag, the adjustable range it needs to cover. We stock inline lengths from 260mm up to 1200mm, and offset lengths across five adjustable ranges from 310mm up to 1200mm.

How to Identify the Right Window Hinge

A window hinge lets the casement sash swing open while carrying its full weight, so choosing the wrong one can leave a window dropping, sticking or failing to close properly. Because of this, you need to know two things before ordering a replacement:

Top hung hinges run along the top of the sash, so the window opens outward at the top.Side hung hinges, on the other hand, run down the side of the sash, so the window swings open like a door.

2. Length

Measure the full length of the existing hinge from end to end. We stock top hung lengths from 8 inch up to 24 inch, and side hung lengths of 12 inch and 16 inch, so most common casement sizes are covered.

Window Espagnolette Locks

What is a window espagnolette?

A window espagnolette, or “espag”, is the locking mechanism fitted into a uPVC or aluminium casement window frame, so it drives the shootbolts that engage the frame at multiple points whenever the handle is turned. Consequently, when a window handle feels loose, won’t lock, or the sash doesn’t pull in tight against the seal, a worn espag is usually the cause.

What’s the difference between an inline and an offset espag?

An inline espag runs in a single straight line along the frame, with the handle spindle sitting centrally on that line. An offset espag, meanwhile, steps the handle out to one side of the running line, which is common where the window handle needs to clear a trickle vent, cill, or other frame feature. So check your old mechanism’s shape before ordering a replacement.

How do I measure my window espagnolette for a replacement?

Remove the old mechanism and measure its overall length end to end, then measure the backset from the frame edge to the centre of the spindle hole. For an offset espag, note the adjustable length range printed on the faceplate, since these mechanisms are designed to cover a span rather than a single fixed length.
