How to Identify the Right Gearbox

A gearbox is the central locking mechanism inside a uPVC door, so it controls the latch, deadbolt or hookbolt whenever the handle is lifted or the key is turned. Because of this, you need to know three things before ordering a replacement:

1. Backset

This is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle hole. The most common backset sizes are 30mm, 35mm and 45mm, so measure from the faceplate edge to the centre of the handle spindle to be sure.

2. Centres

This is the distance between the centre of the spindle hole and the centre of the euro cylinder hole. Most commonly, this is 92mm. However, twin spindle gearboxes also have a second measurement — typically 92-62mm.

3. Spindle Type

Single — one continuous spindle runs through both handles. Split, on the other hand, uses two separate spindles, so the outside handle can be locked independently. Twin — meanwhile, two spindle holes sit at different centres for specialist configurations.

Understanding Gearboxes

What is a door lock gearbox?

A door lock gearbox is the central mechanism inside a uPVC door multipoint lock, so it controls the latch, deadbolt or hookbolts whenever the door handle is lifted or the key is turned. Therefore, when a uPVC door fails to lock, is difficult to operate, or the handle lifts but nothing engages, the gearbox is usually the component that has failed and needs replacing.

How do I measure the backset?

The backset is the distance from the edge of the door (the faceplate edge) to the centre of the spindle hole — the hole through which the door handle spindle passes. The most common sizes are 35mm and 45mm, although 30mm is used on some older or narrower profile doors. So, measure carefully with the gearbox removed for accuracy.

What is the difference between single, split and twin spindle?

A single spindle gearbox uses one continuous spindle passing through both handles. A split spindle, however, has two separate half-spindles, so the outside handle can be locked independently of the inside handle. A twin spindle, meanwhile, has two separate spindle holes at different centres (typically 92mm and 62mm) to accommodate specialist handle configurations.

What is the difference between a hookbolt and a deadbolt gearbox?

A deadbolt projects a straight rectangular bolt into the door frame when locked. A hookbolt, on the other hand, projects a curved hook that engages with a striker in the frame — so it offers strong resistance to forced entry. Ultimately, your choice depends on the striker plate already fitted to your door frame.

Can I replace my gearbox without replacing the whole lock?

Yes — in most cases, the centre-case gearbox can be replaced independently, so the rest of the multipoint lock system stays in place. However, you need to match the backset, centres and spindle type of the original gearbox to ensure the replacement fits correctly.
