How to Identify the Right Gearbox
A gearbox is the central locking mechanism inside a uPVC door — it controls the latch, deadbolt or hookbolt when the handle is lifted or the key is turned. To find the correct replacement, you need to know three things:
1. Backset
The distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the spindle hole. The most common backset sizes are 30mm, 35mm and 45mm. Measure from the faceplate edge to the centre of the handle spindle.
2. Centres
The distance between the centre of the spindle hole and the centre of the euro cylinder hole. Most common is 92mm. Twin spindle gearboxes also have a second measurement — typically 92-62mm.
3. Spindle Type
Single — one continuous spindle through both handles. Split — two separate spindles, outside handle can be locked independently. Twin — two spindle holes at different centres for specialist configurations.
